Concrete in Drain Removal

For your drains to do their job properly, they need to be as clear as possible at all times. One of the worst scenarios to face is concrete in drains. Whether you mistakenly poured it away there yourself or it was emptied into the drain as a result of a hole boring issue during a large construction project, it’s one of the hardest situations to resolve.

However, at Express Drainage Surveys, we have the vast industry experience and knowledge to remove concrete from drains. As stubborn a material as concrete may be once it has cured and set in place, there is no blockage that our dedicated team can’t handle.

With the latest technology on our side, we can make short work of any concrete clearance from your drain. Plus, if you know there is concrete in a drainage system but you’re not sure where exactly it has hardened underground, we can use our state-of-the-art CCTV survey equipment to locate the blockage before getting to work.

How to remove concrete from drains

Removing concrete from drains can be performed in two main ways, but both require the services of drainage experts with the right tools and the knowledge to handle them safely.

The first option is to use a biodegradable solution to soften the concrete and then apply drain jetting to gradually remove it from the pipe once we’re able. But what if the concrete has totally compacted in the drain and the solution cannot penetrate through? In many instances, we recommend hydro cutting to remove concrete from drains more quickly and with a lower chance of damaging your drain.

We utilise this state-of-the-art technology to make light work of what is a tricky situation, where a directional water beam is applied at such a pressure that it breaks down the concrete to allow for its easy removal. The other benefits of hydro cutting can include:

  • Precise technique thanks to computer-operated units controlling the water jets
  • It’s cost-effective due to less labour being involved
  • It’s time-efficient, often working three times faster than drain jetting
  • Less impact on your drains, leaving you without further issues

If you’d like to know more about how we remove concrete from drains and the different techniques available to you, don’t hesitate to contact our team at Express Drainage Surveys.

FAQs

How can I tell if there is concrete in my drains?
Sometimes, you may see the accident happening, but if you don’t there, are several signs that could point to concrete being the issue with your drainage system. You will likely notice water draining much slower inside and outside of your property, while any gurgling or overflowing is a key sign of a solid blockage that you should have addressed immediately.
What dissolves concrete in drains?
There are some special chemicals you can use to dissolve concrete in drains but these can be a safety risk if you don’t know how to properly deploy them. Once applied, you will still require a professional drain jetting service to remove the broken-down concrete, which is why you should let our expert team handle any blockage for a swift and safe service. While chemicals can dissolve concrete, we find mechanical removal using directed water a much safer – and faster – way to break through. This has the advantage of minimising damage within your drainage system.
Can concrete damage my drains?
Yes. Put simply, concrete inside your drains is bad news as they weren’t designed to handle such a material. Aside from the fact that the concrete will block your system and potentially create water damage around your property when the drains overflow, there is a real risk to the pipes themselves. Concrete will put undue pressure on your pipes, causing them to crack or deform, while joints can be weakened, leading to leaks that require even more work. Without professional concrete clearance for your drain, there could be more subtle side effects too, with the concrete creating a slope inside your drain that creates ongoing drainage issues.
How does concrete get into drains?
The first and most obvious reason concrete gets into drains is through a malicious act of someone pouring it there. However, what’s more likely is an accidental spill or overflow from construction work. Rinsing off excess concrete from tools can also create a build-up in drains. Large construction works can also impact your drains and expose them to concrete without anyone knowing until it’s too late. But in all these scenarios, we can help restore order at Express Drainage Surveys.
